Daddy Dog, Tripp, in Training at 3 1/2 Months!!! Tripp in Crate Training at 9 Weeks!!!

Is a German Shepherd right for you?

My answer would be YES!!! I truly believe every life can be enhanced by sharing it with a German Shepherd Dog.  But a better question might be:
Are You right for a German Shepherd?
German Shepherd Dogs, GSD, are not just a dogs they are people...just like You and Me!!!  Like people they have basic needs.  In addition to food and water a GSD needs to be loved and needed.
  • They need a purpose.  That purpose can be as simple as friend/companion, or as demanding as police work.  The GSD loves to please their person.  And they will pick their person... they may love many, but there will always be that ONE special person they were meant to serve.  It is vital for your GSD to know he/she is loved and needed.  They will look for ways to please you...Training is the way you show them how.
  • The GSD can thrive in any environment, from farms to apartments, but wherever they live they must have daily exercise to stay healthy.  Exercise doesn't have to be Fancy.  It can be brisk walking, running, or even chasing a stick in the park.
  • The GSD is really very easy to groom.  They never need a trip to the groomers, just a good brushing will keep them shiny and clean.  They don't even need to be bathed, just a good spraying off with water is all that is needed when they get muddy to keep them clean. They have natural oils in their skin that help keep them clean -- soap or shampoo is NOT recommended for the GSD.
  • The GSD, like all dogs, do require yearly vaccinations, routine worming, flea and tick prevention, and heart worm prevention.  The easiest way to accomplish this correctly is under the guidance of a qualified veterinarian.  Just like people, the GSD should have yearly health exams.
Back to my original question...Are YOU right for a GSD?
You can answer YES if you can provide:

  • Plenty of Love and Attention
  • Training to teach your GSD how to please you - a well-trained GSD is a happy GSD
  • Daily  Exercise
  • Simple grooming - leaving off the soap and shampoo
  • Veterinarian supervised health care
